Quarterly Shipment of Taiwan's WiMAX CPE Industry Tops 1 Mln Units for First Time in 4Q 09, Says MIC
February 23, 2010

According to research of the Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) conducted as part of the ITIS project, in light of the recovery of the global economy, various WiMAX carriers worldwide predicted WiMAX subscriber growth to take off in the first and second quarters of 2010 and therefore adjusted upwards their WiMAX CPE forecasts for 2010. Starting in the second half of 2009, Taiwanese WiMAX CPE industry shipment volume began to pick up, and quarterly shipment volume topped one million units for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2009, reaching an estimated 1.11 million units. The fourth-quarter shipment volume represented a sequential growth rate of 30.8% and a year-on-year growth rate of 322.6%.

Taiwanese WiMAX CPE shipment value in the fourth quarter of 2009 arrived at approximately US$91.3 million, growing 32.6% compared with the previous quarter. ASP (Average Selling Price) inched up 1.3% to US$82.6, mainly due to the decreased shipment share of lower-priced WiMAX modules.

The Taiwanese WiMAX CPE industry saw significant growth in 2009 compared to 2008. However, due to the rapid declines of ASP, shipment value growth lagged shipment volume growth.

According to MIC Industry Analyst Xiang-Yu Yen, "in the first quarter of 2010, it is expected that Taiwanese WiMAX CPE shipment volume will see considerable declines due to the postponement of shipments for some bid projects and the uncertainty of bid results which will not be revealed until the second quarter."

Looking ahead to global WiMAX development in 2010, it is projected that the WiMAX CPE market will continue to grow due to several factors. The WiMAX subscriber market is expected to see rapid growth thanks to the commercialization of various WiMAX networks worldwide, price drops, increasing options of available devices, as well as the emergence of diverse application services. At the same time, various large-scale bid projects have been launched in the emerging markets. India, in particular, is currently a closely watched market. India is expected to create considerable WiMAX CPE demand in the future. "Taking into account the development of important WiMAX subscriber markets including North America, South Asia, and Eastern Europe, it is forecasted that the Taiwanese WiMAX CPE shipment volume in the full-year 2010 will grow considerably compared to 2009", said Mr. Yen.
